An eye examination is carried out by an Optometrist. They will test your sight, check the health of your eyes and look for signs of general health problems. The examination will normally include the following elements:
This is to find about the reason for your visit and whether it is a routine examination or if you are having specific difficulties. After a few questions the Optometrist will gain a better understanding about you and your eyes. This will allow them to customise the eye examination for your specific concerns. If visual correction is required then details of hobbies and occupational requirements are also essential to provide you with the most suitable visual aids.
Your eyes will be examined both internally and externally using a series of special instruments.
Additional tests will be carried out if required to check for conditions such as colour vision deficiencies, glaucoma and macula degeneration.
Your vision will be measured both with and without spectacles or lenses to check for any problems with your eyesight. You will then be asked to choose between different lenses to see which ones help the quality and clarity of your vision. This is performed for the distance the near and occasionally intermediate especially if you use a VDU.
Eye movements and co-ordination are checked to make sure both eyes are working together and undue stress is not being placed on the eye muscles. Good muscle balance is particularly important for those who use computers or read for prolonged periods.
The Optometrist will have a detailed knowledge of the health of your eyes, the standard of your vision and any special requirements that you may have.
This information will be explained to you but if you do not understand anything or require more information, ask your Optometrist, who will be only too pleased to help
If you require spectacles the Optometrist will advise you on the most suitable options for you. You will be also advised on the appropriate interval until your next examination. If you need medical treatment for an eye condition you may be referred to your doctor or hospital
