ORTHOKERATOLOGY: CORRECT YOUR VISION WHILE YOU SLEEP

Are you tired of depending on glasses or contact lenses during the day? Is the thought of laser vision correction too nerve wrecking or maybe you worry about the cost?

If so, orthokeratology might be the perfect solution for you!

WHAT IS ORTHOKERATOLOGY?

Orthokeratology also known as Ortho-K lenses are specialist overnight contact lenses that temporarily reshape the surface layer of your eye, the cornea as you rest. This painless procedure corrects any refractive errors through the night so by the time you wake up you won’t be needing any vision support throughout the day!

Ortho-K lenses can also slow down and even reverse the effects of myopia in young children and teens. We have patients who claim that this technology has completely changed their vision experience for the better – this is a massive step forward for those who are looking at alternatives to traditional surgeries and procedures.

IS IT PRECISE?

This painless process of vision correction with these specially engineered gas-permeable contact lenses features a flattened surface which gently applies pressure to the cornea in order to shape it so that when you wake up the next morning, any light that enters your eyes is refracted onto your retina at the correct angle.

After a few nights of wearing these Ortho K lenses (usually from 3 days – 2 weeks), your eyes will be able to see clearly without any vision support from glasses or traditional contact lenses. However, if you find that this isn’t for you and wish to return to your spectacles or contact lenses – the effects of Ortho K lenses are fully reversible and just after a few days of not wearing them the effects will wear off.

The initial experience of Ortho K lenses may require a few temporary pairs in order to build up to your desired result. As your eyes are adjusting to these changes you might experience slightly blurred vision and the possibility of seeing halo like shapes around bright lights – these effects settle down after a few days so don’t panic!

CAN EVERYONE USE THEM?

These lenses are primarily used to treat patients with refractive errors associated with short sight and can significantly impact prescriptions upwards of -6.00D. However, they can also be used to treat lesser degrees of hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia.

This is a perfect solution for people who for whatever reason prefer not to wear glasses or contacts all day and for those who cannot have surgery for health or age issues. Ortho – K is also great for the young ones, who might find wearing glasses or contact lenses inconvenient or uncomfortable for their day-to-day activities, and Ortho-K can even slow down and reverse certain conditions such as myopia in young wearers.

HOW ARE OVERNIGHT CONTACT LENSES FITTED?

Here at Eye Care Opticians we’re proud to be one of the few practices in the UK to specialise in the fitting of Orthokeratology lenses, and our highly qualified optometrists will ensure that you leave with lenses bespoke to your prescription.

After having a quick chat regarding your personal requirements, one of our trained optometrists will take measurements of the shape of your corneas with a special corneal topographer to create a detailed 3D image of your eye’s surface. Once we know the details we can fit your eyes with a bespoke pair of Ortho K lenses that match your prescription. We’ll also make sure you’re confident and ready to use and look after your new overnight contact lenses.
