Single-vision lenses

Plastic or glass, this is the simplest form of visual correction available. However choosing the right lens for your prescription is a science.  Together we will help you make the right decision to make this process as simple as possible.

Factors to consider:

  • Type of lens correction: Single vision, varifocals, bifocals or Occupationals
  • Thinner and lighter lenses: Especially relevant for high prescriptions Len coatings:
  • Anti-reflection coatings, sunglass tints, photochromic lenses

Are your arms are no longer long enough to read comfortably?
Do you find light needs to be stronger to see more clearly?

This may sound familiar as you get older.  But instead of denying your eyesight is gradually deteriorating, a visit to Eyecare Opticians can solve these problems swiftly.

We can prescribe glasses to cope with these natural muscle changes which affect each and every one of us.

This is the simplest method of presbyopic correction.  A pair of spectacles will correct reading anomalies.

However this can create some disadvantages:

  • They only correct for one focal point – for reading only
  • Constant removal of spectacles to look at far distance, or swapping between distance and reading spectacles
  • Losing and breaking spectacles through constant removal

How they work?

Combines distance and reading prescriptions into one pair of spectacles which have a dividing line separating the distance from reading area

Only one pair of spectacles required from distance and reading.

  • They have a visible dividing line
  • No smooth transition between distances – you only achieve distance and near viewing
  • Adaptation possibly required

How do they work?

The power of the lens graduates smoothly from one prescription to the other, allowing the wearer to see clearly at all distances.

  • Only one pair of spectacles required for all working distances
  • No visible line
  • No jump from distance to near images
  • Modern, premium quality varifocals mean easier adaptation

  • A period of adaptation maybe required
  • Slight distortion in periphery maybe noticeable, however this is minimised with latest customised varifocal designs

We believe the correct pair of varifocals will leave you completely satisfied.  In fact we are so confident of this, we will replace the varifocals to any other lenses of your choice if you return them within one month of collection if you can not adapt into them.

We stock an extensive range of the latest designer sunglasses. Many of which can be made into prescription sunglasses.

We also stock Sports Sunglasses. Whether swimming, diving, mountain biking, squash or golf is your thing, we will provide you with whatever protective eyewear you need.  Again many of the frames in our sports sunglass collections can take prescription sunglass lenses.

Whatever your prescription, it is important to protect your eyes against excessive ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Protection is needed to avoid reflected light from sand, snow or if you spend long periods outdoors, particularly in the summer. Sunglasses must have UV protection of 400. Tinted glasses without UV protection can harm your eyes as your pupils will dilate allowing more UV light to penetrate through.

Our clear and tinted glasses come as standard with a UV blocker where possible.

Photochromatic (“Transition”) lenses

Photochromatic lenses are designed for everyday use.  They offer all the benefits of clear lenses indoors and sunglasses outdoors.  Photochromatic lenses automatically adapt to changing outdoor light conditions to help reduce glare and prevent eye fatigue.  They also preserve eye health as they block 100% of harmful UV rays.

How do they work?

Photochromatic lenses work on a chemical reaction this takes place within the lens. When the lens is exposed to UV radiation it causes the lens to darken.  The chemical reaction stops when the lens is not exposed to radiation and returns to its original clear state.

Polarised lenses

Polarised lenses eliminate the harsh reflected glare that can bounce off water, snow, glass and metallic surfaces.  As a result they add a new dimension when driving, sailing, skiing and numerous other outdoor activities.  Vision obscured by glare is one of the leading causes of car accidents.

Not only do polarised lenses give safer, more relaxed vision by reducing sunglare, they also provide greater depth perception and crisp, clear vision.

All polarised lenses Eyecare Opticians supply provides 100% protection against harmful UV rays.

How do they work?

When light hits a smooth, reflective surface it polarises.  The vertical light brings useful information to the eye, whereas the horizontal light creates glare.

A thin film of iodine crystals is embedded into the lens in vertical rows.  These act like a ‘Venetian blind’, allowing only useful light through.  Polarised lenses can be tinted in a huge range of colours.

MAR coatings can be added to polarised lenses to further enhance their capabilities.

High-index and aspheric lenses

If you have a moderate to high prescription the weight and appearance of your lenses can be improved using special lens materials and designs.

High-index materials and aspheric designs mean that lenses can now be made thinner, lighter and better looking than traditional lens types.

Table 1. High-index and Aspheric lenses
Lens Type Index % reduction in thickness compared to 1.5 index lens
standard 1.5 Normal crown glass
mid index 1.6 up to 30 % thinner
high index 1.67-1.74 up to 40 % thinner

Multi-layered Anti-Reflection Coating (MAR Coating)

MAR coating virtually eliminates distracting reflections from the lens surfaces. Reducing reflected light is particularly helpful for computer users and for night driving. MAR coatings also improve the cosmetic appearance of your glasses and can make thick lenses look thinner. They also incorporate a scratch-resistant coating as standard.

For those who have MAR coatings you may notice the lens attracts grease and fingerprint marks. At Eyecare Opticians we are also aware of how beneficial MAR coating is and offer supreme lenses that have an additional hydrophobic coating which makes the surface of the lens totally smooth preventing impurities from sticking to it, and making it easier to clean.

All of our lenses come as standard with MAR and hydrophobic coatings where possible.

Crizal Prevencia

Lasting Protection For Eye Health

Crizal Prevencia is Essilor’s latest innovation that selectively filters light for improved eye health protection.

Light plays an essential role in everyday life but can also be the cause of premature eye aging. It is fundamental for your vision; it helps you perceive the surrounding world, and your overall well-being. It regulates sleep/wake cycles, mood and cognitive performance.

UV rays are as dangerous to our eyes as they are to our skin. The resulting damage accumulates over a lifetime, accelerating eye aging and the development of cataracts. Harmful blue-violet light was recently identified as being harmful to retinal cells. Causing long-term damage to our eyes and can accelerate the onset of AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration)

The latest Crizal innovation selectively filters blue-violet light and lets essential visible light pass through.

Crizal Prevencia provides optimal vision and durable transparency by offering the most complete protection against reflections, scratches, smudges, dust and water.

Full two year guarantee against scratching and manufacturing defects.
